Hungarian-American Gothic

Lots of new photos from Hungary. More coming. Highlights include Sziget, a party of transplated Gawker folks, a family afternoon and a visit with a cute Hungarian family. Stay tuned for more. We decided to cancel the Croatia trip and are here in Budapest and Balaton for another week. Keep NYC warm for us.

UPDATE:

Intern Blogger

This cracks me up. Paul Frankenstein has been unavailable for all the fun NYC social events this summer because he’s in Boston. I finally asked what he’s doing up there. A legal scholar, he’s on a summer internship…blogging.

Wash Your Fruit and Vegetables

A friend recently mentioned doing some freelance work on the subject of food safety. She said before that she never bothered to wash fruit and veggies from the supermarket; now she blanches at the thought of not doing so.

Still, I didn’t take her warning personally. I am a sometimes fruit and vegetable washer, myself. Occasionally, I pick up fruit from one of the many sidewalk carts in NYC, and I don’t think I was ever in the habit of rinsing the fruit before eating it in that case; if I do wash veggies, it would normally be in my kitchen at home.

This morning, however, has changed my mind. I got to work early and bought a peach and two bananas from a guy in the neighborhood of my office as he was still setting up. Suddenly he turned at the approach of a street-cleaning truck and eyed a box of tomatoes by the curb. We both stared as the hulking truck splashed through a puddle. I didn’t actually see any of the murky, doubtless-putrid water splash on the tomatoes, but it was too close for comfort in any event. I washed that peach first thing on getting to the office.

My Favorite Celeb Blog

I have a list somewhere down on my endless blogroll of my favorite celeb blogs. I have to say, the one that really impresses me every time I visit it is JeffBridges.com. He’s really tremendously creative. It’s actually one of the most original blogs I’ve seen, considering that he draws it all by hand in Pfeiffer-esque illustrations. What’s a crying shame is he doesn’t get more traffic.

NY Fundraising Event, The Arctic National Wildlife Reserve

My friend Nick Aster writes to inform me of this:

Join us Tuesday, August 2, 2005 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm for a cocktail party at Glass Lounge at 287 Tenth Avenue between 26th and 27th streets.

Your donation will support the critical efforts of the “Treasure America” Project Team to show how not drilling in the Arctic Refuge stimulates economic development in the US and preserves the last pristine piece of the American Arctic.

The event will include a short multimedia presentation from 7:15 ? 7:30 pm showing unreleased documentary video footage from the Refuge.

More details here.
