One Fat Cat

fat-cat.jpg

I don’t know the story behind this picture. A friend just sent it to me. I’m trying to get clarification. Photoshop? The woman is 3 feet tall? It’s actually a small kid in a cat suit? All I know is, if it’s a real cat, it could eat my two cats for breakfast.

UPDATE:
Thanks to Erika Herzog for directing me to Snopes.com for details on this photo, the ultimate source for validating or refuting the incredible things you find online. Snopes concludes the photo is real and includes other shots of the woman (Martha) with the cat (Riley). I was right (in private conversations — something I neglected to blog) that the cat is a Maine Coon, the largest breed of domestic house cat. Apparently, the woman is short, the cat is fluffy and the perspective of the photo exaggerates the cat’s proportions. The cat, nonetheless, is big: 24 pounds at the time of this photo.

    glad you’re back blogging, rick….

supposedly my cousin found this at http://www.snopes.com — the woman is tiny and the cat is large.

but couldn’t find the actual picture there. there’s a composite of a man and his cat, which looks like it’s about the size of a rhino.

The picture is real. You have a short person holding a cat. The cat is a breed called a “Maine coon”

One of the oldest natural breeds in North America, the Maine Coon is generally regarded as a native of the state of Maine. A number of attractive legends surround its origin. A wide-spread belief is that it originated from matings between semi-wild, domestic cats and raccoons. This myth, bolstered by the bushy tail and the most common coloring led to the adoption of the name.

i have a red maine coon that looks exactly like the one in the picture. mine is 18lbs and growing….not fat. my cats father was a grand champ and was 35 lbs and was crazy big. looked like a golden retriever. my cat is extremely tall….4ft when standing. he can grab food off the counter with one flick of his paw.
