Comments

Okay, I’ve optimistically added comments as a permanent feature to the Bruner Blog. Thus, I’m really counting on all you regular readers — both of you — to comment frequently, so the site doesn’t look particularly stupid with nothing but (0) comments on every post. Also, because of the way I’ve done this, previous posts that included one-off comments now have two sets of comments fields, but that shouldn’t be particularly relevant to most of you, as the odds of you reading back in the archives are even less likely than you coming to the site’s homepage by means other than via Google in the misguided quest for dirty content.

Shop Till You Drop

So much for Buy Nothing Day. I’ve previously reported that shopping at Wal-Mart can be dangerous. Further proof: shoppers trample a woman unconscious to get a deal on a DVD player.

Required Reading

If you don’t get the New Yorker or otherwise haven’t yet read George Packer’s 20,000-plus-word article “War After the War,” you really must do. Very glad to have found it online.

Modern Drunk

Maybe it’s a bad sign that friends introduce me to sites like this. Then again, the site does impart some practical wisdom.

UPDATE:
Maybe this site could be of some help.

Kids and Dogs

Spent the weekend out of town with some college friends, including a three-year-old and two dogs. Here’s a sample of what constituted about 70% of conversation this weekend:

“No, no, no, no!! Bad boy/dog!!”

“What do you have in your mouth? Take that out of your mouth right now!”

“Go play in the livingroom, the grownups/humans are trying to talk.”

[CRASH!!!] “What now?”

“Uh, [name of host], I’m sorry but [name of dog/boy] just broke your [treasured family heirloom].”

“Yuck, you’re slobbering on my arm.”

“Oh my god! Where’s [name of boy/dog]?? Has anyone seen [name of boy/dog]?!”

“[Name of boy/dog], leave the nice man alone. No, no, no! No biting!”

“Uh-oh. [Name of boy/dog] just peed/shat/puked on the couch/wall/suitcase.”

“[Name of boy/dog]!!!! Get your hand out of/stop drinking from the toilet!!!”

. . .

Dear friends, I love you all, including [names of dogs and kid], but give me cats any day of the week.

Todo el Bruner, Toda la Hora

Todo el Bruner, Toda la HoraI was looking at the referral links to my blog, as I’m wont to do obsessively a few times a day, and I see someone was surfing the site via Google’s translation service in Spanish. How excellent is my site motto in Spanish? I’m generally reluctant to mess with tradition, but I’m seriously thinking of changing it to the Spanish version. Thoughts?

All of You European and Other Internationalists, Look for Me on CNN!

Hey, a reminder, those of you living outside the U.S. who get CNN International, today (Tuesday) there is a piece scheduled to run on the program Global Office for which I was interviewed on the topic of business blogging. It’s supposed to show at 5:30pm Eastern Standard Time (US) — do the math to figure out what time that is in your time zone.

Segments from that show are supposed to get picked up sporadically on CNNfn, but the journalist told me that CNNfn has original programming at that time EST, so it seems unlikely it will be shown here today in the U.S. market. It may repeat over the weekend, too. I’m one of the last Americans who still refuses to pay for cable TV, so I won’t see it regardless.

Please do let me know if you see it. I’d love to find it on their site. I’ll keep an eye out for it.

The Chili Terrorist

All hail Don Eastep. He entered the 37th annual Original Terlingua International Frank X. Tolbert-Wick Fowler Memorial Championship Chili Cook-Off, reputedly Texas’s best, and his strategy was simple: take a spoonful sample of every other contestant’s chili, stir them together in a bowl, and present that as his own entry. It worked. He won.

(Interestingly, no mention on the official contest’s site.)

Democracy Aid

DemocracyAid.net, the product of two imaginative Swedish students, is seeking to raise $1 from every citizen of the European Union in donations for the liberal online political organization MoveOn.org in an effort to take American democracy global and bounce Bush in ‘04. The Nation comments (Adi alerts).
