Do We Want an Uprising or Not?

Serious mixed signals: On the one hand, Donald Rumsfeld said yesterday (incredibly) that he does not want Iraqi civilians to rise up against Saddam, because that would oblidge us to a messy defense of their uprising. Meanwhile, Tony Blair is assuring Iraqis they should rise up and that we’ll be there to support them (or, the Brits will, anyway, apparently), reported by no less authority than the Voice of America.

What the hell? Do we really know our asses from our elbows in this whole situation?

In a story about the battle against a large column of Iraqi units underway as I write this, AP editorializes: “Coalition forces have made no secret of their hopes to spur such uprisings in the strategic southern city.” Hmmm, I don’t know that “coalition forces” have let the Secretary of Defense in on that little secret.
