Bush Admin Suprised Saddam’s Not Playing Fair?
An end to a disheartening day, I’m reading this story in the NYT about how the U.S. administration is suggesting that some of the dead members of the convoy captured by Iraqis the other day may have been publicly executed in Nasiriya. This quote particularly struck me:
Later, his spokesman, Ari Fleischer, said that the delay in getting aid to southern Iraq was the fault of the Iraqi authorities. “We didn’t expect the Iraqis to cease caring about their own people, to cease feeding their own people, to put up impediments to this humanitarian relief supplies,” he said.
One thing I really don’t understand is why the Bushies made the biggest idiot in the White House the press spokesperson. Ari Fleischer is the only person in the administration who actually sounds stupider than Bush most of the time.
They didn’t expet that Saddam would be ruthless and abandon all niceties of war? Excuse me? Isn’t this the same adminstration that has building Saddam up as the evilest bastard on the planet, gas his own, etc., etc., as we’ve been hearing for months? This kind of behavior wasn’t a contingency? So what the f— do we do now that he is fighting this way?
And what was this I heard on NPR today, was it Rummy, saying that if Saddam used chemical weapons, then we had a plan to really show him? What does that mean? I really hope we’re not talking going nukular, as our fearless leader would say.
