Gogol Bordello, Sept 22 @ Knitting Factory
I won’t miss them this time. Gogol Bordello, NYC’s infamous Ukranian Gypsy punk band, were the talk of the NY blogosphere a month ago, but I missed that much-discussed performance. As if that weren’t incentive enough, two friends (who for good measure shall nameless) described how the lead singer of the band, Eugene Hutz, went bonkers in a most entertaining way last Saturday night at the weird Bulgarian disco/restaruant Mehanata, where he’s the weekend DJ.
As I heard it, he started with a few hours of wild dancing, mostly on table tops, and around 3:30am when he had been standing on the DJ table banging his head against the wall for 10 minutes, the bar owner came over to say the party was over. At that point, Eugene apparently freaked out and started ripping all the sound equipment apart, thrashing cables and tearing the speakers off the wall and smashing them. “It wasn’t enough,” said my friend, “that he tore the speakers off the wall and threw them on the ground, he then had to jump up and down on them for several minutes.”
As the best Ukranian Gypsy punk band in New York, you can’t pay for that kind of publicity.
(Thanks to Elizabeth for the tip on the upcoming concert.)
